Consumers Energy Unveils 20-Year Energy Supply Plan

Jackson, Mich., Sept. 3, 2026, Consumers Energy today unveiled its long-term Energy Supply Plan, a 20-year blueprint designed to ensure reliable and affordable energy for Michigan residents through a diversified mix of natural gas, solar, wind, and storage solutions. The plan aligns with the state's clean energy targets while maintaining competitive pricing, underscoring the company's commitment to meeting Michigan's growing energy needs.

The all-of-the-above approach includes an expanded portfolio of renewable energy resources, with plans to add over 19 gigawatts (GW) of solar, wind, and battery storage by 2040. This expansion will be complemented by two fast-starting natural gas plants in Bay and Genesee counties, generating a combined 1.4 gigawatts, to support high-demand periods.

"We recognize the critical role we play in powering Michigan 24/7," said Chris Fultz, Consumers Energy's senior vice president of electric supply. "Our plan ensures that we can meet our customers' energy needs while driving down their bills and supporting the state's clean energy goals."

Under the plan, Consumers Energy will also purchase power from third-party sources, including a clean resource contract to meet Michigan's clean energy standards and a new agreement with the Midland Cogeneration Venture. These measures aim to bolster reliability and efficiency, with the company repurposing existing industrial sites to minimize environmental impact.

The Energy Supply Plan is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions, boosting the local economy. Additionally, the plan will enhance the state's tax base through billions of dollars in investments in natural gas, wind, solar, and battery storage projects.

Craig Wright, president of the Michigan State Utility Workers Council, praised Consumers Energy's commitment to skilled labor. "This investment will create good-paying jobs for people in Michigan who are ready to meet the state's energy needs," Wright said.

The full Energy Supply Plan and supporting documents have been submitted to the Michigan Public Service Commission for approval, with a decision expected within the next year. Consumers Energy serves over 6.8 million Michigan residents, providing natural gas and/or electricity across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
