Cognizant Expands AI Workforce Initiatives in U.S

Cognizant, a leading AI builder and technology services provider, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at preparing America’s workforce for the AI era. The company is expanding its hiring efforts to 1,500 U.S. college graduates and scaling new job categories such as Frontier Certified Engineers and Frontier Business Operators to 15,000 people. These roles are designed to leverage the emerging technologies and ensure American workers can adapt to the changing landscape.

According to Cognizant, AI has the potential to unlock $4.5 trillion in U.S. labor productivity and an additional $1 trillion in economic value over the next decade. To harness this opportunity, the company is doubling its global AI skilling commitment to train two million people by 2030. Ravi Kumar S, CEO of Cognizant, stated, "AI will create significantly more jobs than it displaces and will shift greater value, wages, and accountability to the frontlines of America's workforce. The opportunity now is to build those pathways quickly, so American workers and enterprises capture that value first."

In addition to these hiring and training initiatives, Cognizant is joining RAISE US, a bipartisan national coalition launched by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. The coalition aims to help American workers transition into the AI economy and is backed by leaders from companies such as Amazon, Anthropic, Bank of America, IBM, Microsoft, and the OpenAI Foundation. Kumar S sits on the Advisory Board of RAISE US and is committed to advancing the work the company has already started.

Cognizant's global Synapse skilling initiative has already trained over one million people, surpassing its original goal of one million a full year ahead of schedule. This initiative, combined with the company’s university partnerships with institutions like the University of Georgia, Arizona State University, and the University of Kentucky, and its role as a national program sponsor of registered apprenticeships, ensures a steady stream of skilled workers entering the job market.

Surya Gummadi, President of Americas at Cognizant, emphasized the importance of these new roles, saying, "AI is fundamentally reshaping job roles across sectors, and the workforce should be helping drive that change instead of scrambling to keep up with it. That's why we're hiring U.S. graduates directly into the roles this shift is creating. Frontier Certified Engineers and Frontier Business Operators are real, funded positions at Cognizant today, and they are proof that this transition creates opportunity for American workers, not just disruption."

Cognizant is also committed to expanding its philanthropic efforts, having awarded $70 million in grants since 2018 to expand access to STEM education and technology careers. The company has built a global strategic partnership with Pearson and a workforce-development collaboration with the Association of Community College Trustees. Research from Cognizant and Oxford Economics highlights the potential of AI to perform $4.5 trillion worth of U.S. work tasks today, with generative AI poised to inject $1 trillion into the U.S. economy over the next decade.
