WASHINGTON, DC, DC, UNITED STATES, October 5, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Coach Kitty Chambliss, founder of Loving Without Boundaries, has released a screening guide for therapists working with consensually non-monogamous clients. The guide comes in response to a study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, which found that one in five clients in consensually non-monogamous relationships reported their therapists lacked the basic knowledge to effectively assist them.
The study, which surveyed 249 people in consensually non-monogamous relationships across the United States and Canada, revealed that a significant portion of these clients felt their therapists were inadequately informed about consensual non-monogamy. Approximately 20% of participants reported that their therapists lacked the necessary knowledge, or they had to educate the therapists themselves. Additionally, the study found that clients' perceptions of their therapists' practices influenced whether they ended their therapeutic relationships prematurely.
Kitty Chambliss, who has coached people in open and consensually non-monogamous relationships since 2015, has observed firsthand the challenges faced by clients seeking therapy.
Chambliss's screening guide aims to address these issues by providing therapists with straightforward questions to ask potential clients. The guide includes the following questions: 1. Have you worked with clients in open or consensually non-monogamous relationships before, and roughly how many? 2. What training have you had on the subject, and when? 3. If my relationship structure is not the reason I am here, will you be able to leave it alone? 4. And what would you do if you found yourself struggling with it?
Chambliss emphasizes the importance of these questions, particularly the last one.
The guide is part of a broader effort to improve the therapeutic experience for consensually non-monogamous clients.
Chambliss's screening guide is designed to help clients make informed decisions about their therapists, ensuring that they receive the support they need without having to repeatedly explain their relationship structures.
The shortage of therapists knowledgeable about consensually non-monogamous relationships is not due to hostility, Chambliss believes.
By providing this guide, Chambliss hopes to bridge the gap and ensure that consensually non-monogamous clients receive the support they need without unnecessary explanations and energy depletion.
