China shares disaster data to aid Nepal relief efforts

BEIJING, Sept. 4, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Global Times reports that China has actively shared critical monitoring data to support Nepal’s relief efforts following the August 26 mudslide in Gyirong Port, near the China-Nepal border. This data sharing, according to a Nepalese expert, highlights the stark differences in the disaster's impact on the two countries.

The mudslide, triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse, struck Gyirong Port in the Xizang Autonomous Region of Southwest China. Chinese rescuers have been working tirelessly to reach the affected area. As of Wednesday, 21 people were confirmed dead on the Chinese side, with 541 still missing. In Nepal, the death toll stands at 1,118, with 4,858 individuals unaccounted for.

Amod Mani Dixit, a Nepalese expert and founder of the Nepal National Society for Earthquake Technology, shared his insights with the Global Times. Dixit, who is also a senior geologist and disaster risk management specialist, noted that the disaster’s impact was asymmetric. On the Nepali side, critical regional infrastructure, including hydropower installations and bridges, suffered extensive damage. The debris flow, he said, entered Nepal entirely, transforming into a systemic disaster.

In contrast, China’s economic resilience, technological capabilities, and robust scientific resources are expected to facilitate rapid self-reliance in reconstruction efforts. Nepal, on the other hand, will require substantial international support for its rehabilitation.

Dixit outlined three key relief priorities: restoring logistical lifelines by deploying modular Bailey bridges to reconnect isolated border communities; upgrading shelters to protect survivors from the harsh alpine climate; and deploying tactical communications to address paralyzed regional telecoms.

The expert also addressed misconceptions that emerged in the aftermath of the disaster. The "source fallacy" incorrectly assumed that the debris flow was triggered within Chinese territory, while in reality, the collapse occurred entirely on the Nepali side. The "typological error" categorized the event as a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), which led to false narratives about Chinese monitoring systems. Dixit emphasized that bilateral communication channels remained intact and functional throughout the crisis.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, announced that the third batch of emergency relief supplies had been dispatched to Nepal, including tents, blankets, mortuary refrigerators, medical protective suits, and satellite communication equipment. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research is also making new progress in studying the disaster mechanisms.

Feng Chaoyang, from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, previously stated that China could act as an experience provider, institutional promoter, and capacity builder in multilateral disaster risk reduction cooperation across the Himalayan region. He proposed sharing scientific foundations and technical standards, building institutionalized multilateral coordination mechanisms, and establishing cross-border joint prevention mechanisms to overcome administrative boundaries.

This collaboration aims to integrate hazard surveys, satellite monitoring, and ground-based observation into a real-time coordinated early warning and emergency response system. The goal is to create a framework that enables proactive disaster management rather than a passive response.

The comprehensive scientific analysis provided by China is seen as instrumental in helping Nepalese authorities and the public understand the disaster's trigger mechanics. This data sharing underscores China's commitment to supporting its neighbors in times of need, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in disaster management.
