Charter College Hosts Mass Casualty Emergency Drill

Charter College, a private institution of higher education in Anchorage, Alaska, is hosting a significant emergency preparedness training exercise on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The event, aimed at enhancing the skills of nursing students, will simulate a mass casualty scenario to prepare them for real-world emergencies.
The training is set to take place on the Anchorage campus at 2221 East Northern Lights Blvd. Students will practice responding to a variety of medical needs, with a focus on leadership and collaboration. Nursing faculty and senior students will take on key roles, coordinating patient movement and making triage decisions, while junior and entry-level students will handle clinical response tasks or serve as simulated patients.
Ted Walker, a practicing APRN and nursing faculty member at Charter College, explained, "Our nursing students will respond to scripted scenarios to treat individuals with planned 'injuries.' This drill builds their confidence and leadership skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for real emergencies."
Cynthia Booher, Ph.D., Dean of Nursing at Charter College, emphasized the importance of such exercises, stating, "Emergency situations can happen at any moment, and our nursing students must know how to respond. These events provide them with a chance to implement their training in a realistic setting."
Representatives from partnered medical facilities in Alaska will observe the exercise and provide feedback throughout the event. These partners will also conduct preparation and debriefing sessions, allowing students to reflect on their performance and identify areas for improvement.
The mass casualty emergency preparedness drill is part of Charter College’s ongoing commitment to equipping its students with practical skills necessary for today's healthcare environments. The event is fully simulated and does not pose any threat to students, employees, visitors, or the surrounding community.
