Cavco Unveils HUD-Compliant Home Without Steel Chassis

PHOENIX, Sept. 17, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Cavco Industries, Inc., a leading manufacturer of manufactured homes, unveiled the Grande Arbor, the first HUD-code manufactured home built without a permanent steel chassis, at the 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from September 22 to 24.

The showcase, organized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), aims to highlight innovative housing designs and technologies that can increase the supply of affordable homes and reduce costs for both owners and renters. This year, the event drew policymakers, industry leaders, members of Congress, and the public for tours of model homes and educational discussion panels on housing affordability.

On July 11, 2026, the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act eliminated the federal chassis mandate for HUD-code housing, expanding building options for buyers, builders, and communities. This change allows for lower-profile installation, enhancing curb appeal and enabling smoother integration into traditional neighborhoods. The new capability also opens up access to new urban and suburban markets and developments, as well as offering greater design flexibility, including multi-story construction.

The Grande Arbor, built by Cavco's Rocky Mount, Virginia team, introduces a double grande suite floor plan, placing two primary suites at opposite ends of the home. These private areas are connected by a shared kitchen, dining, and living space designed to meet the needs of households looking for multigenerational housing options. According to the Pew Research Center, about 22% of Americans, or more than 74 million people, currently live in multigenerational households. The National Association of Realtors reported that in 2024, 17% of homes purchased in the U.S. were bought specifically for multigenerational use, the highest share on record. Aging parents, adult children returning home, and the rising cost of maintaining separate households are among the factors driving this trend.

The Grande Arbor, built by Cavco's Rocky Mount, Virginia team, is Cavco's latest in a series of firsts aimed at expanding affordable housing options. In 2023, Cavco - Rocky Mount also built and introduced the Anthem, the first nationally available manufactured duplex approved by HUD.
