Capital Power and Alpine Canada have entered into a significant partnership aimed at advancing Canadian winter sports. The agreement, valued at up to $25 million over a five-year term, is designed to modernize operations, invest in athlete pathways, and enhance the overall performance of Canadian winter sports.
Capital Power has committed to a $5 million investment in the first year, with the potential for an additional $20 million over the partnership’s duration. This substantial financial backing is expected to support the transformation of Alpine Canada, a governing body for alpine, para-alpine, and ski cross racing in Canada. The partnership is also expected to catalyze broader investment in Canadian winter sports, potentially reaching a total of $25 million, contingent on the amalgamation of Alpine Canada with at least one additional national amateur snow discipline and additional government funding.
The partnership’s primary goals include making skiing more accessible across different regions and abilities, while empowering the Canadian National Ski Team to achieve podium success on the World Cup circuit, at World Championships, and at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. A key aspect of the agreement is the removal of all team fees for national and development teams across all Alpine Canada disciplines, allowing athletes to focus fully on their training and performance.
Alpine Canada’s President and CEO, Andrew Baker, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Today marks a turning point for Alpine Canada and Canadian ski racing. Capital Power’s long-term support gives us the capacity to modernize, direct more resources to athlete and coach development, and pursue closer alignment across winter sports.”
The Government of Canada has also welcomed the private-sector investment, announcing $2.77 million in supplemental funding for Alpine Canada. This brings the organization’s total funding for 2026-2027 to $8 million, which includes investments in the Whistler, Panorama, and Nakiska national training centres. The government’s support underscores its commitment to strengthening Canada’s sport system and bringing partners together to support a more ambitious future for winter sports.
Capital Power’s President and CEO, Avik Dey, emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, “Sport has the power to bring Canadians together, inspire young people, build future leaders, strengthen communities, and our country. We’re proud to back Alpine Canada as it opens skiing to more Canadians, equips athletes and coaches to compete at the highest level, and brings partners together to support a more ambitious future for winter sport.”
The partnership is expected to expand participation in winter sports and create the conditions for Canada to become a world-leading winter sport nation, from the club level to the World Cup tour and beyond. With the support of Capital Power and the Government of Canada, Alpine Canada aims to leverage this partnership to achieve its ambitious goals and enhance the overall performance of Canadian winter sports.
