Canadians Invited to Walk for Children in Need This October

Markham, ON, Canada, Oct. 01, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- This October, Canadians are being invited to participate in a unique walking challenge called "Carry the Weight," organized by Children Believe, a charity that has been working alongside communities for over 65 years to remove obstacles that prevent children from attending, staying in, and completing school. The goal is to raise awareness and funds to support children like 12-year-old Hamdiya in Ghana, who walks up to 12 kilometers a day with her mother, carrying water home for their family before heading to school.

Hamdiya's daily routine is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by children in poverty. Her story is not unique; across the communities Children Believe supports, children and families routinely walk long distances carrying heavy loads, often at the cost of their education and well-being.

The walking challenge is designed to give Canadians a tangible way to connect with the daily realities of children in need. Participants can choose to walk 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers, or 100 kilometers over the month of October. They will add weight to their steps, carrying a loaded backpack, a weighted vest, or even a water jug, echoing what Hamdiya and other children carry every day. There is no set route, no start time, and no finish line to attend. The challenge is meant to be a personal journey that can be completed on one's own terms.

The funds raised through the challenge will go directly to Children Believe's work in more than 1,025 communities across 8 countries, removing barriers like Hamdiya's daily walk for water. These barriers often keep kids from going to, staying in, and finishing school. The challenge aims to help children like Hamdiya by providing them with the resources they need to focus on their education.

The challenge is catching on quickly. More than 500 Canadians have already signed up, and the momentum is building. Participants are encouraged to take the steps they are already counting and give them a purpose. The popular "10,000 steps a day" benchmark works out to roughly 7 to 8 kilometers, which is less than the distance Hamdiya covers every day. By participating in the Carry the Weight challenge, Canadians can help make a difference in the lives of children around the world.

Children Believe is a proud member of the ChildFund Alliance, a global network of 11 child-focused organizations supporting more than 36 million children and families worldwide. The organization has been working alongside communities to remove the obstacles that prevent children from achieving their full potential. By participating in the Carry the Weight challenge, Canadians can join this effort and make a tangible impact.

The challenge is open to anyone who wants to participate. Workplaces, schools, and friend groups can register as teams and fundraise together, making it a natural fit for corporate wellness and community service programs. The challenge is designed to be a daily habit given a purpose, a physical, visceral connection to the cause, and a challenge that anyone can do on their own terms.
