Canada Nickel Chooses Komatsu and SMS Equipment for Crawford Nickel Project

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has chosen Komatsu and its largest Canadian dealer, SMS Equipment Inc., to supply the load and haul and support mining fleet for its Crawford Nickel Project. The project, which is expected to span 40 years, will see the purchase of over 300 machines, valued at approximately C$1.5 billion.
The selection of Komatsu and SMS Equipment is driven by the companies' commitment to automation and electrification technologies, which align with Canada Nickel's vision of creating one of the most advanced mining operations globally. The use of these technologies is expected to contribute to the safe, sustainable, and low-carbon production of critical minerals from the Crawford project.
Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel, expressed excitement about the potential value that Komatsu's technologies, including DISPATCH for fleet management and FrontRunner for autonomous haul trucks, could bring to the project. Selby noted that SMS Equipment's experience in implementing these technologies at other Canadian operations and its demonstrated commitment to the Crawford project could significantly de-risk the project's start-up and ongoing operation.
Canada Nickel is advancing the Crawford Nickel-Cobalt Sulphide Project, which is located in the heart of the prolific Timmins-Cochrane mining camp. The company is focused on delivering nickel required to feed the high-growth electric vehicle and stainless-steel markets. Canada Nickel has applied in multiple jurisdictions to trademark the terms NetZero Nickel, NetZero Cobalt, and NetZero Iron, and is pursuing the development of processes to allow the production of net zero carbon nickel, cobalt, and iron products.
The company expects to complete negotiations with SMS Equipment and Komatsu by the first quarter of 2027, along with fleet support agreements and the previously announced fleet financing arrangements with Taykwa Tagamou Nation.
With this selection, Canada Nickel is taking a significant step towards the development of the Crawford Nickel Project, aiming to make it one of the most advanced mining operations in the world.
