In a move aimed at supporting independent pool service businesses, California Pool Partners (CPP) has officially launched its owner-centric platform, offering an alternative to traditional private equity roll-up models. The new approach combines operational expertise, advanced AI tools, and vertical integration to foster mutually beneficial partnerships with pool service business owners.

Unlike conventional private equity roll-ups, which typically focus on rapid consolidation and centralized control, CPP prioritizes collaborative relationships with owners. The platform's founders, Evan Ferl, Eric Johnston, and Mark Doody, are committed to helping owners professionalize and scale their businesses while preserving local ownership, neighborhood relationships, and service quality.

CPP has already established a strong presence in two major California markets: Los Angeles and San Diego. The company recently acquired Payan Pools, a respected pool service company in San Diego County, highlighting its practical application. Javier Payan, who built Payan Pools over nearly four decades, shares his experience: "If I was to write down what it would take for me to sell this business, it was all right there. They checked all my boxes."

CPP’s model is designed to centralize certain financial, administrative, and selected operational functions while granting substantial day-to-day authority to each company's general manager. This approach ensures that local managers can make decisions that impact their businesses without external pressures. "We don't have anybody behind us pushing us to optimize something at the sake of service quality or employee satisfaction," says Eric Johnston, Co-Founder of CPP.

The platform currently operates through subsidiaries such as AC Pools LLC and Payan Pools LLC, serving thousands of residential and commercial pools across Southern California. CPP leverages hands-on operational support and AI-forward systems tailored to pool service, including route optimization, water chemistry management, predictive maintenance, and customer communications. Additionally, the company benefits from vertical integration, spanning service delivery, chemical handling and compliance, equipment, and technology.

Evan Ferl, Co-Founder of California Pool Partners, emphasizes the platform’s commitment to preserving the unique qualities of local businesses. "Independent, locally rooted businesses built California's pool service industry," he says. "Our goal is to be the best long-term partner for those owners – helping them continue to build on what they've created while preserving the local relationships, reputation, and culture that made their businesses successful in the first place."

With plans to expand into a third market this fall, CPP aims to continue growing its network of owner-centric partnerships. The company’s approach to combining operational expertise, advanced technology, and a commitment to local ownership offers a compelling alternative to traditional private equity roll-up models, providing a pathway for pool service businesses to thrive while maintaining their unique identities.
