ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 6, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Bristol Bay sockeye salmon, the world's largest source of wild sockeye, has been found to outperform farmed Atlantic salmon in key nutritional values, according to a recent analysis. This discovery, timed for National Seafood Month, highlights the exceptional nutritional profile of the fish caught in Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

Each year, Alaska fishermen catch approximately 30 million wild sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay. This abundant catch supports roughly 8,000 commercial fishermen and drives economic activity in rural Alaska communities. The Bristol Bay fishery is a cornerstone of the region’s economy, providing livelihoods and sustaining local communities.

An independent analysis revealed that a single 113-gram serving of Bristol Bay sockeye contains 23 grams of protein, which is 163% of the daily value for vitamin D, and 56% of the daily value for selenium. These nutritional figures are impressive, but they are just the beginning. Bristol Bay sockeye also outperforms farmed Atlantic salmon in other essential nutrients. A 113-gram serving of Bristol Bay sockeye contains 40% more EPA omega-3 fatty acids, 2.6 times more vitamin D, and 4.3 times more calcium compared to USDA reference data for farmed Atlantic salmon.

The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association (BBRSDA), a fishermen-funded group, has been working to increase the value of the Bristol Bay fishery through education, quality outreach, and marketing. The BBRSDA’s Executive Director, Lilani Dunn, emphasized the unique qualities of Bristol Bay sockeye.

Consumers can now find Bristol Bay sockeye near them. The BBRSDA offers an online Fish Finder tool that helps consumers locate this year’s wild sockeye catch directly from fishermen who ship across the United States or find retailers carrying Bristol Bay sockeye nearby. The tool is available at https://bristolbaysockeye.org/.

The Bristol Bay sockeye’s nutritional superiority and the support it provides to local communities make it a standout choice for seafood lovers. As National Seafood Month approaches, Bristol Bay is giving seafood enthusiasts 30 million reasons to celebrate the exceptional qualities of its sockeye salmon.
