Bone Marrow Transplant Gives 2-Year-Old Victoria a Second Chance

At Nicklaus Children's Hospital, a groundbreaking procedure has given a 2-year-old girl, Victoria, a second chance at life. The hospital's Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute successfully performed the first case of its kind at the facility—a bone marrow transplant using a haploidentical match from Victoria's father for the treatment of Griscelli Syndrome Type II.
Diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder at just 2 months old, Victoria faced a dire prognosis. Griscelli Syndrome Type II affects approximately one in a million children and can lead to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a life-threatening condition where the immune system attacks the body's organs. At 12 months old, Victoria's only hope for survival was a bone marrow transplant.
Dr. Ossama Maher, Director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, led the complex and delicate procedure. "At Nicklaus Children's Hospital, we are prepared to treat even the rarest cases through advanced treatments, expertise, and resources," Dr. Maher stated. "Victoria's case is one in a million, and we were confident that her father's willingness to donate, combined with our team's experience, could give this little girl the childhood and future she deserves."
The procedure was successful, and Victoria's transplant is considered a cure for her HLH. The young girl, now 2 years old, has returned home after a year of intensive treatment at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. "Nicklaus Children's Hospital saved my daughter's life, and my husband was her real-life superhero," Ethel, Victoria's mother, said.
