Bombardier acquires MHICA assets to boost manufacturing and supply chain resilience
Bombardier Inc. is set to significantly bolster its manufacturing capabilities and supply chain resilience through the acquisition of MHICA assets in Mississauga, Ontario. The transaction, valued at an undisclosed amount, is expected to close later this year, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
With the addition of MHICA's aerostructure manufacturing capabilities and approximately 750 employees, Bombardier aims to enhance its in-house aerostructures expertise and operational resilience. The move is in line with the company's long-term growth strategy and reflects a commitment to meeting growing customer demand.
David Murray, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Supply Chain Execution, and Bombardier Operational Excellence (BOE) System, stated, "This agreement represents a key step in Bombardier's long-term growth strategy, strengthening critical capabilities, enhancing operational resilience, and supporting the company's flexibility to meet growing customer demand."
MHI Canada Aerospace, Inc. (MHICA) has built a respected operation with a talented and experienced team. As part of the acquisition, MHI will work closely with Bombardier to ensure an orderly transition, aiming to maintain continuity and avoid disruption to ongoing aircraft programs. MHI will also provide transitional support for an interim period following the closing to facilitate the smooth transfer of operations.
Hiroyuki Koguchi, Executive Vice President, Head of Commercial Aviation Systems at MHI, commented, "We are proud of what our employees have achieved at MHICA and of the important contributions they have made and will continue to make to these aircraft programs. Together, we have built one of Canada’s aerostructures manufacturers, and this agreement ensures a bright future for our employees, whose skill, dedication, and expertise have been central to MHICA’s success."
The transaction is also in line with Bombardier’s strategy to invest in strategic capabilities that support its long-term priorities. Sandra Hodgkinson, Senior Vice President of Strategy and M&A at Bombardier, added, "This transaction is fully aligned with Bombardier’s disciplined approach to investing in strategic capabilities that support our long-term priorities. It strengthens our manufacturing footprint, reinforces our supply chain, and enhances our ability to meet sustained demand for our aircraft portfolio."
This acquisition reinforces Bombardier’s position as one of Canada’s leading aerospace and defense employers and demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to investing in Canadian talent and manufacturing excellence. MHI remains committed to the commercial aerospace and defense sectors and will continue to maintain a significant presence in Canada through its other business activities.
By integrating MHICA’s assets, Bombardier aims to deepen its core manufacturing expertise and contribute to the growth of the local aerospace industry. The transaction underscores the company’s dedication to advancing the future of aviation through innovation and sustainable practices.
