HOUSTON, Oct. 05, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Baylor Genetics has been selected as the lead sequencing partner for Florida’s Sunshine Genetics Pilot Program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at screening newborns for nearly 900 genetic conditions. This program, spearheaded by Florida Representative Adam Anderson, is the first statewide effort to offer Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) to detect genetic disorders that are not currently screened through standard newborn screening processes.
The five-year pilot program, which was established under the Sunshine Genetics Act, will begin accepting voluntary enrollments from parents or legal guardians at designated Pediatrica Health Group pediatric primary care locations. Baylor Genetics will provide the advanced genome sequencing services and process the tests immediately upon enrollment.
The program is administered by the Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases at Florida State University and is guided by the multi-institutional Sunshine Genetics Steering Committee. Healthcare industry partners are also supporting the initiative.
Baylor Genetics, with its advanced genome sequencing platform and robust clinical and scientific expertise, is well-equipped to handle the demands of the pilot program. The company serves clients in 50 states, ensuring that its services are accessible to a wide range of families across the country. Through its comprehensive genetic testing services, including Whole Genome Sequencing, Whole Exome Sequencing, and focused panels, Baylor Genetics aims to provide comprehensive diagnostic options to help clinicians avoid a lengthy diagnostic odyssey for their patients.
The launch of the Sunshine Genetics Pilot Program marks a significant step forward in the evolution of newborn screening. By offering advanced genomic sequencing, the program seeks to identify genetic conditions earlier, providing more clarity and better-informed medical management for infants and their families.
