Barton Venture Capital, led by CEO Chris Barton, has completed the acquisition of Wave Systems Inc., a leading provider of digital assistive lifeguard technology. The deal, which brings WAVE under Barton's direct leadership, aims to expand the company's offerings and develop a comprehensive AI-powered drowning prevention platform.

Barton's personal connection to the acquisition is deeply rooted in tragedy. In 2003, his daughter Alexis Barton lost her life in a lakefront drowning accident. This experience has driven Barton's commitment to preventing drowning incidents across various water environments, from commercial pools and public waterfronts to residential backyards.

Barton first became involved with WAVE in 2024 as a board member and investor. He was named CEO in 2025 and led the company's transition to an affordable, subscription-based, hardware-as-a-service model called GUARDian℠. Today, WAVE is the largest digital assistive lifeguard technology provider in North America, with systems deployed across 40 U.S. states and Canada.

Under Barton's leadership, WAVE is expanding its mission to create a single, one-stop platform for modern drowning detection technology. The company is now adding AI-powered, camera-based systems for commercial pool operators and residential pools. This new solution, WAVE Vision℠, supports lifeguards and monitors swimmers in real time. Paired with Wade, an AI-powered prompting assistant, pool operators can use voice or typed commands to query recorded video for lifeguard and swimmer performance, safety compliance, and other activities on and around the pool deck.

The acquisition of WAVE by Barton Venture Capital marks a significant step in the company's mission to prevent drowning incidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children under five and the second leading cause for ages 1-14. The CDC also reports that Black children ages 10-14 years drown at rates 7.6 times higher than White children in swimming pools.

Barton Venture Capital, founded by Chris Barton, is a technology entrepreneur and investor with a career spanning various sectors, including SaaS, artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, water technology, quantum computing, healthcare, and telecommunications. Through BVC, Barton continues to identify and grow technology companies that address significant, real-world problems.

The acquisition of Wave Systems Inc. is part of Barton's broader vision to build a comprehensive, AI-driven assistive lifeguard platform for every type of water environment. The company aims to bring modern drowning detection technology to any body of water, whether professionally staffed or largely unsupervised.
