Avathon and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) have announced the establishment of the Avathon Physical AI Lab (Avathon PAL) at IIT Roorkee's Department of Computer Science & Engineering. This research initiative aims to advance the science of Physical AI for the industrial economy, leveraging the strengths of both organizations to tackle complex challenges.
Avathon, a leader in bringing autonomy to industrial operations, will collaborate with IIT Roorkee, a premier institution known for its research in optimization, machine learning, knowledge representation, and multi-agent systems. The partnership is spearheaded by Pervinder Johar, CEO of Avathon, who is also an alumnus of IIT Roorkee. Johar expressed his personal connection to the institution, stating, "IIT Roorkee shaped how I think about the world and what's possible within it. Returning to build something lasting here is deeply personal."
The Avathon PAL will work closely with Avathon's AI Center of Excellence (COE) in Bangalore, forming a bridge between frontier research and real-world deployment. Together, the lab and the COE aim to develop cutting-edge Physical AI solutions for industries such as mining, energy, manufacturing, logistics, aerospace, and others.
Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying, "The proposed Avathon Physical AI Lab marks an important step in strengthening the bridge between cutting-edge research and real-world industrial challenges. Physical AI is emerging as a transformative frontier, bringing together artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and physical operations. At IIT Roorkee, we are committed to fostering such interdisciplinary and industry-driven research that not only advances scientific knowledge but also contributes to India's technological self-reliance and the vision of a Viksit Bharat 2047."
The Avathon PAL will support a range of activities, including sponsored doctoral fellowships, collaborative research across multiple problem areas, student internships and industry exposure at Avathon, and workshops and technical events that connect the initiative to the broader research community. The lab reflects a shared conviction that the next frontier of artificial intelligence lies not in enterprise IT but on the factory floor, in the supply chain, and across critical infrastructure, physical operations that move and sustain the global economy.
This collaboration is expected to yield significant advancements in Physical AI science, driving innovation and industrial autonomy. Both Avathon and IIT Roorkee are optimistic about the potential impact of this partnership on the broader industrial sector and the global economy.
