Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is experiencing significant growth, with major players investing heavily in the sector. A notable example is the US$1 billion commitment by NVIDIA and Eli Lilly to advance drug discovery through AI. The initiative, announced on January 12, 2026, will leverage NVIDIA's BioNeMo ecosystem and accelerated computing to drive advancements in drug discovery, robotics, physical AI, and pharmaceutical production.

NVIDIA's BioNeMo ecosystem is being expanded to support AI-driven biological research and drug discovery, while Microsoft is embedding AI assistants into clinical documentation and decision-support workflows. Microsoft reported in March 2026 that more than 100,000 clinicians were using Dragon Copilot, a clinical assistant designed for physicians, nurses, and radiologists. The expanded capabilities of Dragon Copilot, introduced at HIMSS 2026, include AI applications and agents across clinical insights, revenue cycle management, and decision support.

The global AI in healthcare market, which reached US$37,331.9 million in 2025, is projected to expand to US$373,269.8 million by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.1% during 2026-2033. The market's growth is attributed to increasing healthcare data generation, demand for improved patient outcomes, cost-effective healthcare solutions, research and development activity, and government support for healthcare AI.

North America currently holds the largest market position, supported by major technology and healthcare companies, healthcare infrastructure investment, and government initiatives. The market is expected to continue growing, with Asia-Pacific being the fastest-growing region. Software represents the leading product type, with healthcare organizations increasingly using machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning, and related AI capabilities across imaging, diagnostics, drug discovery, hospital management, risk analytics, wearables, and virtual healthcare applications.

The University of Texas System launched UT REAL Health AI, a US$25 million initiative focused on responsible and scalable healthcare AI. The program covers AI evaluation, transparency, accountability, and safety across UT institutions and will support the assessment of hundreds of healthcare AI use cases.

In China, the National Health Commission and other government agencies issued implementation guidance for "AI + healthcare," targeting wider use of AI-assisted primary care, medical imaging, clinical decision support, and intelligent patient services. The policy aims to deploy AI-assisted clinical applications by 2030.

The market for virtual reality in medical simulation is also advancing, with Maverick Simulation Solutions investing more than ₹50 crore in research and development to advance medical training simulators through AI, augmented reality, and virtual reality. The initiative is expected to strengthen demand for immersive and repeatable training technologies while expanding access to locally developed simulation solutions.

In the smart farming market, Kubota Corporation has invested €6.5 million in Kilter Precision Agriculture, a Norwegian agri-tech company. The investment is aimed at accelerating the development of autonomous precision-weeding technology, which uses ultra-high-precision spot spraying to target weeds while minimizing herbicide use.

Teladoc Health launched Teladoc One in July 2026, introducing an integrated virtual-care model supported by always-on AI and built on more than 100 million virtual visits across primary care, mental health, chronic illness, and acute care. The platform combines clinical history, claims, pharmacy, and other data to provide comprehensive virtual care.

The digital therapeutics market is also growing, with the market valued at USD 18.83 billion in 2025 and expected to reach USD 30.65 billion by 2032, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% from 2025 to 2032. The market analysis highlights the increasing demand for digital therapeutics in various healthcare applications.

These investments and advancements underscore the growing importance of AI in healthcare, driving innovation and improving patient outcomes.
