Amazon Workers Rally in Chicago for Delivery Protection Act

Hundreds of Amazon delivery workers in Chicago are set to rally on Tuesday, September 15, to demand action from the city council. The workers, supported by local elected officials and labor and civil society groups, will gather at Chicago City Hall to call for the passage of the Delivery Protection Act.

The proposed ordinance, introduced by Alderwoman Julia Ramirez (D-12th District), aims to ban Amazon's use of third-party Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) and require the e-commerce giant to directly hire its delivery workforce. If passed, the legislation would mandate that Amazon license its facilities with the city and ensure that all deliveries are made by its own employees.

This move comes in the wake of the successful implementation of a similar Delivery Protection Act in New York City. The New York City Council has already shown strong support for the legislation, with a supermajority backing it. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also expressed his support for the measure.

The Chicago rally, organized by the Teamsters union, is part of a broader effort to protect the rights and working conditions of delivery workers. The union argues that the current model, which relies heavily on DSPs, has led to a lack of job security, benefits, and fair compensation for workers.

Alderman Ramirez stated, "It's time for Amazon to step up and take responsibility for the working conditions of its delivery drivers. By directly hiring and licensing its workforce, Amazon can ensure that its workers are treated fairly and have the protections they deserve."

The Chicago Federation of Labor and Chicago Jobs with Justice, among other labor and civil society organizations, are also supporting the rally. They believe that the proposed ordinance is crucial for the well-being of the city's delivery workers and the overall logistics industry.

The rally, scheduled for 12 p.m. Central Time, will feature speeches from labor leaders and elected officials, as well as a demonstration of the concerns and demands of the delivery workers. The event is expected to draw significant attention to the issue and put pressure on the city council to act.
