SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Anza, the core engineering team behind Solana, has announced the live deployment of Alpenglow, a new consensus protocol that significantly reduces transaction finality time on the Solana blockchain. This upgrade, which marks the largest consensus upgrade since the network's launch in 2020, brings finality down to sub-second speed, making transactions irreversible in about 150 milliseconds, a dramatic improvement from the previous 12.8 seconds.

The transition to Alpenglow was seamless, occurring at slot 459,653,000 on Wednesday, October 21st, at approximately 14:00 UTC. Solana's validators retired the previous consensus protocol, TowerBFT, in favor of Alpenglow, ensuring the continuity of the network's operations without any disruption. This aggressive timeline, achieved in under 18 months, is a testament to the caliber of Anza's development team and the extensive collaboration with the ecosystem teams and validator operators.

The engineering achievement extends beyond speed, as validators replaced the consensus system while maintaining the existing ledger's integrity. This process required independent operators to coordinate a shared handoff point, ensuring the transition was both smooth and secure.

Before reaching the mainnet, Alpenglow underwent rigorous testing, including red teaming, penetration testing, and repeated migration rehearsals. It was also launched on Solana's testnet and devnet, allowing for thorough validation and optimization. Anza developed the protocol and implemented it in Agave, the validator software it maintains, while independent validator operators adopted and activated the upgrade.

The Alpenglow design, published by Anza's research team in May 2025, led by ETH Zurich professor Roger Wattenhofer with Quentin Kniep and Kobi Sliwinski, focuses on delivering deterministic settlement speed. This upgrade is expected to enhance the responsiveness of payment and trading applications, providing a better user experience for merchants and exchanges.

Looking ahead, there are additional improvements planned for Alpenglow. Rotor, a feature that changes how block data spreads across the network, is designed to reduce handoff latency between leaders. Quantumglow, a research design for post-quantum security, aims to swap Alpenglow's elliptic-curve cryptography for hash-based signatures while maintaining the same finality speed. These enhancements are planned for later releases and have no committed date yet.

This upgrade underscores Solana's commitment to pushing the boundaries of blockchain performance and scale, positioning it as a leading infrastructure for financial applications. As Solana continues to power internet capital markets, Alpenglow ensures that the network can meet the stringent requirements of traditional finance, delivering the speed and finality necessary for robust financial transactions.
