Alli Gerrish Bridges Contemporary Abstraction with Mid-Century Design

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 8, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Boulder-based artist Alli Gerrish is set to present a unique exhibition that blends contemporary abstract art with mid-century modern design at Agora Gallery in New York. The exhibition, titled "Modern," will run from October 15 to November 3, 2026, and will showcase six of Gerrish's abstract paintings alongside a curated selection of collectible mid-century modern furnishings.

Gerrish's work is known for its distinctive vocabulary of organic forms, earthy hues, and hand-worked surfaces. Her paintings, which engage with the exhibition's furnishings, underscore the idea of art meant to be lived with. The artist's practice spans painting, digital painting, printmaking, mixed media, video, and narrative voiceover, with a focus on exploring human emotion, energy, and lived experience.

Central to Gerrish's visual language is the hourglass, a recurring motif that serves as a stand-in for the self, measuring not only the passage of time but the movement of universal human experience. Her painting "Weight A Minute" (2024) initially evokes the ordered geometry and graphic vocabulary associated with mid-century modern design. However, beneath its carefully balanced arrangement of stacked forms lies a more precarious narrative. A pale blue crescent teeters at the top edge of the composition, while a partially obscured female figure is physically constrained by bands of white. This work addresses the accumulated societal and systemic pressures placed on women, transforming a seemingly playful abstraction into a meditation on balance, constraint, and resilience.

In both her practice and the mid-century ethos, Gerrish finds a common thread of embracing imperfection and material honesty. Just as mid-century design honors the scars and knots of wood as proof of authenticity, her narrative abstractions honor human vulnerabilities. Through her work, Gerrish aims to tell stories of vulnerability not as weakness but as a profound form of beauty, turning wounds into shields of strength.

The opening reception for "Modern" will be held on Thursday, October 15, from 6 to 8 PM at Agora Gallery, located at 530 West 25th Street, New York. The exhibition promises to be an immersive experience that explores the relationship between fine art, color, form, and the spaces we inhabit, inviting viewers to consider how contemporary painting and design can transform, and be transformed by, their surroundings.
