Alfa Laval Supplies Heat Transfer Technology for Europe’s Largest BECCS Project

LUND, Sweden, Sept. 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Alfa Laval has been chosen by Saipem to supply heat transfer technology for Stockholm Exergi's BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) project, a significant step in Europe's efforts to combat climate change. The project, set to begin operations in 2028, aims to capture, liquify, and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, marking one of the largest bioenergy carbon capture facilities in Europe.

Stockholm Exergi, a leading Swedish energy provider, is spearheading this initiative at Europe's largest biomass-based combined heat and power plant in Stockholm. The facility will capture and store CO₂ from the combustion of biogenic fuels, with Alfa Laval's heat transfer solutions playing a crucial role in maximizing system efficiency and heat recovery. This project aligns with Sweden's broader climate neutrality goals and contributes to the EU's climate strategy.

Egil Nybakk, Director of BECCS at Stockholm Exergi, highlighted the dual benefits of the project. "The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO₂ from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high-quality Ziepack heat exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used. This energy will go back into our existing district heating system, which contributes additionally to our carbon removal targets."

The project will utilize Alfa Laval's Ziepack gas-gas interchanger and multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers, integral parts of the core capture process. These technologies are designed to enhance the efficiency of the carbon capture process and support the project's ambition to become one of the world's largest facilities for the capture and permanent storage of biogenic CO₂.

Stockholm Exergi's BECCS project is part of a broader effort to achieve net-negative emissions. The facility will generate renewable energy from biomass while capturing and permanently storing the resulting CO₂, contributing to the reduction of global carbon emissions.
