Alexander Dennis secures £57 million contract for 207 low and zero-emission buses

LARBERT, United Kingdom, Sept. 04, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Alexander Dennis, a leading manufacturer of buses and motorcoaches, has secured a significant £57 million contract to supply 207 low and zero-emission buses to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. The order is part of a broader fleet renewal effort aimed at improving public transport in the region.

The contract includes 117 low-emission Enviro400 double-deckers, 60 low-emission Enviro200 single-deckers in two lengths, and 30 zero-emission Enviro100EVs. The buses will be built in Britain to meet the City Region’s high specification for the ‘Metro’ network and are scheduled for delivery in 2027.

In addition to these new vehicles, 109 low-emission Enviro200 single-deckers are currently being delivered for the first tranche of franchised services in St Helens and the Wirral, set to begin on September 6, 2026. The region also procured 58 zero-emission Enviro400EV double-deckers from Alexander Dennis earlier.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, emphasized the importance of the new buses in creating a seamless transport network. "We are renewing our fleet with ultra-modern, accessible buses to give our residents a premium, reliable experience. This is crucial for designing a network that prioritizes passengers and drives our region forward," he stated.

Alexander Dennis’s SmartPack efficiency technology, which combines engine stop/start with e-cooling and auxiliary load management, will be used in the new buses. This technology is expected to reduce emissions by 18% to 24% compared to conventional Euro V diesel buses. The buses can potentially be converted to electric operation through Alexander Dennis’s AD Repower service.

Matthew Lawrence, Head of Franchising & Bids for Alexander Dennis, expressed satisfaction with the contract. "We are delighted that the Liverpool City Region found our bids to be the most commercially advantageous in four of the six lots available. This will bring our total bus orders for the region to around 400," he said.

The new buses will be manufactured in Alexander Dennis’s UK factories in the North of England and Scotland. The company is working closely with the social value team at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to highlight the benefits of these orders to the local community.

The contract includes options for additional vehicles, which could increase the number of buses to 357 at a total investment value of £95 million if fully exercised. The new fleet is expected to significantly enhance public transport in the Liverpool City Region, benefiting approximately 1.6 million residents.
