Air Force Master Sergeant Acquitted of All Charges in Long-Running Case

In a significant legal victory, Air Force Master Sergeant Matthew D. Jones was acquitted of all charges in a case that had spanned nearly four years. The case, which began with a negligent homicide allegation, concluded on August 21, 2026, with a not guilty verdict after a general court-martial panel heard evidence and deliberated.

The incident occurred on the night of October 14, 2022, when Jones’s Chevrolet Tahoe struck an unknown object on U.S. Highway 80 in Haughton, Louisiana. Jones did not stop at the scene and drove home, where he reported the incident to his insurance company and the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputies inspected the vehicle and the route but found no evidence of a pedestrian or property damage. The following morning, pedestrian Donald G. Finnell was discovered deceased near the roadway.

Following a thorough investigation, the 26th Judicial District Attorney in Bossier Parish declined to file charges, and the state investigation closed on April 1, 2023. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations initiated a military investigation the following month.

In September 2025, Jones was charged with negligent homicide under Article 134. However, the charge did not survive preliminary review. After an Article 32 hearing, the hearing officer found no probable cause and recommended against referral. Nevertheless, the convening authority dismissed the charge on December 12, 2025, before the case reached a court-martial.

A separate charge of making a false official statement (Article 107) was withdrawn and dismissed without prejudice.

The panel returned a verdict of not guilty on all charges and specifications.”

The defense also argued that there was no evidence of alcohol consumption during the driving period. Deputies had already inspected and photographed the vehicle, and Jones had disclosed the washing of the vehicle the next morning, consenting to searches and providing the necessary evidence.
