AI Engines Disagree on Holiday Gifts but Agree on Top Retailers

BrandRank.AI, a company that analyzes AI recommendations, has released findings from its 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index, which examined the recommendations of six leading AI engines, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, and Meta AI, on holiday shopping questions. The study revealed that while AI engines agreed on which retailers to shop from, they were less consistent when it came to recommending specific products.

According to the BrandRank study, four retailers, Amazon, Target, Nordstrom, and Costco, dominated recommendations for delivery, returns, and customer service, capturing 80% of the recommendations. However, when it came to recommending specific holiday gifts, the engines were more divided. Only one product question produced unanimous agreement, with the Amazon Fire HD Kids tablet being the unanimous choice.

Customer service emerged as a key differentiator. Amazon and Nordstrom led in different areas. Amazon excelled in delivery and checkout, while Nordstrom took the lead in returns, refunds, and problem resolution. Across eight core customer service questions, Nordstrom captured 25 of 48 first-place recommendations, compared to just one for Amazon.

The study also highlighted the importance of making service visible and credible to AI. The word "return" appeared 28 times in 72 customer service rationales, underscoring the significance of return policies and customer service in shaping AI recommendations. Even as retailers invest heavily in AI-powered support, the engines continue to emphasize practical service promises and established reputations.

Challenger brands also broke through in the study. Quince was recommended for affordable cashmere, Bellroy for men’s wallets, Aura digital frames for grandparents, and Furbo for pet lovers. Only one AI engine, Claude, named Pop Mart’s Labubu as the toy of the season, highlighting the importance of a clear, distinctive consumer benefit for brands.

The engines also disagreed sharply on harder gift questions. Gifts for mothers, fathers, and coworkers, as well as budget gifts under $25 and luxury gifts over $250, each produced six different answers from the six engines.

BrandRank.AI’s research also surfaced potential accuracy and currency issues. The study flagged 33 answers involving outdated products, questionable pricing, or recommendations that did not fit the question. Four engines continued to use the retired name Rufus for Amazon’s shopping assistant, indicating ongoing challenges in keeping AI recommendations up to date.

The BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index analyzed 950 scored AI-generated responses and their supporting rationales, comparing brand visibility, recommendation patterns, cross-engine consensus, and potential accuracy issues. The findings represent a snapshot of AI recommendations and do not reflect independent product tests or measures of actual retailer performance.

The study points to several practical priorities for brands: publishing clear, current delivery and return policies, making product information and consumer FAQs easy to find, documenting service capabilities and complaint resolution, supporting claims with credible third-party evidence, and regularly testing how different AI engines interpret and recommend the brand.

BrandRank.AI plans to revisit the service questions during the January returns season to track whether holiday shopping and service experiences change retailer recommendation patterns. The interactive BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index includes an AI-built holiday gift guide, customer service analysis, profiles of emerging brands, comparisons across all six engines, and a searchable database of questions, recommendations, and supporting rationales.
