Aetna Expands Bundled Oncology Prior Authorizations

Aetna, a CVS Health company, has expanded its bundled prior authorization process for oncology treatments, aiming to simplify the administrative burden for healthcare providers and accelerate patient access to care. This move, effective as of September 1, 2026, covers all eligible Medicaid members in eight states: Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The initiative builds on the success of an initial roll-out, which saw almost 25% of eligible members receiving a single, secure prior authorization.

Prior to this expansion, providers were required to submit four separate prior authorizations for each member in need of cancer treatments. By combining medical oncology, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, with radiation oncology services and associated high-tech imaging needs, Aetna is streamlining the process. This consolidation is achieved through a single portal, reducing the administrative overhead and allowing oncologists to focus on patient care.

Katerina Guerraz, Aetna's Chief Operating Officer and President of Medicaid, emphasized the importance of reducing paperwork for healthcare providers.

The administrative burden remains a significant challenge for healthcare providers. According to Aetna's Provider Survey, 74% of providers identified administrative burden as the top challenge facing clinical staff today, and nearly one-third cited prior authorization management as the single largest contributor. By reducing this burden, Aetna aims to help clinicians unlock more time for patient care. In fact, 30% of Aetna Provider Survey respondents believed they could save more than an hour, and 80% expected to save more than 30 minutes daily on administrative tasks through technology solutions such as bundles.

Aetna plans to expand the eligibility of this bundled prior authorization process to Medicare and Commercial members in the first half of 2027. The company is committed to continuing its efforts to improve the healthcare experience for both providers and patients.
