Adventist Health White Memorial and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello, two nonprofit, faith-based hospitals in Los Angeles County, have been found to generate over $1.2 billion in annual economic activity and support approximately 5,500 jobs, according to a new study by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).
The study highlights the critical role these hospitals play in the healthcare safety net for high-need communities. Together, the hospitals serve more than 2.4 million residents across their combined primary and secondary service areas. Approximately 86% of Adventist Health White Memorial's payor mix comes from Medi-Cal and Medicare, underscoring the significant financial pressures they face.
President Daniel Fontoura of Adventist Health White Memorial and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello emphasized the hospitals' deep integration into the communities they serve.
The study, which evaluates the hospitals' economic and fiscal impact, including direct operations, supply-chain activity, and employee spending, reveals the broader economic benefits these institutions bring to the region. The hospitals' impact extends beyond healthcare, supporting local businesses and benefiting families throughout Los Angeles County.
In its Primary Service Area, 14.4% of residents are uninsured, nearly twice the Los Angeles County average of 7.6%. This highlights the critical role these hospitals play in providing trusted care close to home, especially for underserved communities.
Paul Young, Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Public Policy at the Hospital Association of Southern California, noted, "Community hospitals such as Adventist Health White Memorial are an essential part of our healthcare safety net. They provide trusted care close to home and help ensure that underserved communities are not left behind."
Adventist Health White Memorial Foundation is calling on philanthropic partners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to help sustain healthcare access and community investment.
Adventist Health White Memorial and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello are nonprofit, faith-based hospitals providing compassionate, whole-person care across Los Angeles County. Together, the hospitals offer inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic, and specialty services, serving more than 545 licensed beds.
The study, conducted by the LAEDC's Institute for Applied Economics, underscores the significant economic and social contributions these hospitals make to the region. As healthcare safety nets face growing pressures, the findings highlight the importance of supporting and sustaining these critical institutions.
