LUBBOCK, Texas, Sept. 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- A new survey conducted by Tandem, a company that helps financial institutions manage security and compliance, reveals that 25% of banks, credit unions, and other financial organizations have reported incidents involving deepfake or AI-driven impersonation. Additionally, 21% of the surveyed institutions are uncertain whether they have experienced such incidents.

The survey, which included responses from 85 financial professionals, highlights the growing threat of AI-generated scams and the need for enhanced security measures. Among the key findings, 46% of respondents either reported an incident or could not rule one out. The primary concerns among the respondents were fraud and impersonation scenarios, such as AI-generated phishing, social engineering, and voice cloning.

According to the survey, voice cloning was identified as one of the most significant AI-related threats. Only 8% of the respondents expressed high confidence in their employees' ability to identify AI-generated scams and impersonation attempts. Furthermore, most organizations have not yet conducted deepfake-focused tabletop exercises, indicating a lack of preparedness in responding to these threats.

The survey also found that AI-generated phishing and social engineering attacks are leading concerns for financial institutions. These attacks can be inserted into everyday business processes, including payment requests, account access requests, customer interactions, and help desk communications. These scenarios rely heavily on employee actions and operational processes for detection and response.

The survey highlights the importance of financial institutions moving toward more robust security measures. These include verification procedures, employee training, and response testing to better manage AI-driven threats such as deepfakes and impersonation attacks. Organizations that take these steps will be better positioned to reduce their exposure and respond effectively to evolving AI-driven risks.

The survey included a diverse range of financial institutions, representing various asset sizes. This broad sample provides valuable insights into how organizations of different scales are addressing deepfake and AI-related risks. Tandem's CEO emphasized the need for financial institutions to take proactive measures to protect against these sophisticated threats.
