Cole Noble Jean-Louis, a 17-year-old playwright and high school senior, has debuted his first production, "God's Stepchild," a play about deportation's hidden victims, at two iconic Philadelphia theaters. The performances, which will benefit immigrant families, are set for Friday, October 9, at 6:00 PM at the Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut Street, and Saturday, October 10, at 3:00 PM at The Adrienne Theater, 2030 Sansom Street.
Jean-Louis, whose work centers on the realities faced by children left behind when their parents are deported, began working on the play at 15. He developed the concept further through the Changemakers Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship, transforming it into a powerful theatrical piece. The play will be followed by a talkback session with cast members, audience members, and community participants, providing a platform for open dialogue and discussion.
The young playwright, a grandson of Haitian immigrants, was inspired to create "God's Stepchild" after witnessing the devastating impact of homelessness during his freshman year of high school. "Philadelphia has given me so much," Jean-Louis said.
In addition to his work on "God's Stepchild," Jean-Louis is the founder of the Mustard Seed Project, an initiative addressing housing insecurity, food insecurity, and mental health. The project received a $3,000 Shape Philly Idea CoLab grant from Creative Philadelphia and has since expanded to include film projects that have received international recognition. He is also the president of the Belfry Club, founded in 1894 and recognized as the nation’s oldest continuously running school drama club.
Jean-Louis, who has written 10 feature-length screenplays, multiple theatrical plays, and short films, has performed in more than a dozen theater productions and independent films. He received the 2023 Germantown Academy Drama Award and has been recognized for his work as an emerging filmmaker, director, screenwriter, actor, and producer.
The upcoming production, with its powerful emotional narrative and sharp, resonant dialogue, is a can't-miss theatrical event for local arts lovers, students, and supporters of emerging talent. Following the performances, Jean-Louis will hand an oversized $5,000 check to representatives of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, a group that supports immigrant families and works for justice and dignity for immigrants in the city.
The play's run is a testament to the young playwright's commitment to using his talents to address important social issues.
